Cancel Culture Backfires? Sci-Fi Community Stands Against Censorship - (SPSFC)
Cancel Culture Backfires? Sci-Fi Community Stands Against Censorship - (SPSFC)
The Self-Published Science Fiction Competition (SPSFC) has become a battleground for free speech vs. censorship. After the alleged blackballing of Devon Eriksen, many in the sci-fi community are speaking out against gatekeeping and cancel culture. But is this an isolated incident, or part of a larger problem in indie publishing?
In this video, I break down what happened, why it matters, and how the pushback against censorship is reshaping the conversation around sci-fi, publishing, and creative freedom.
Do you think the SPSFC was right or did cancel culture backfire? Let’s discuss in the comments!

👏👏👏👏🙌 You already know my opinion, but I will say it... banning is banning... wrap it in a word called cancelation with a bow, and it's still BANNING. Is banning bad or not bad... I'm confused, and these cancel monkeys have a math that isn't mathing. I don't understand point the finger and say the thing, while doing the thing only soooooooo much worse. The "punishment" doesn't fit the "crime"... oh... How does it make sense... remove the "offender" from a a competition they didn't even put themselves in for... for what hurt feelings... really? The author doesn't care about your fan made competition that he did not enter... I repeat, he did not enter... had no clue until he was told by someone else who saw the backlash begin that anything was going on... and it's over a tweet?! And opinion that is not like the others?! Ohhhh noooooooooooo not thaaaaaaat.... Do ya know what I now want to do? I wanna read the book. I doubt I'm alone.

It is good to see the backlash, and this was an egregious case. Devon is a good fellow and a very successful author, and no competition should have engaged in this kind of behavior. This kind of thing needs to be resisted immediately whenever it surfaces. Keep bringing attention to this topic, great video.

There are people who can't watch videos over 5 minutes long now. I'm sad. I like the idea of BookTube more than the reality. It is about pretty people, pretty book shelves, 'comedic' intros and consumerism. It doesn't seem to be about content. I'd rather read book reviews now or listen to podcasts. Other than TBR or Wrap-Up's or *shiver* tags, I'm not sure what BookTube is and I'd love to see people make the videos they want to make rather than what they think they should make. I wouldn’t have known of this author if the Screech Mob hadn’t pitched their fits over it. (I have it on Kindle, haven’t cracked it open yet.) The world has changed. The activists have lost their grip on the public mind, and I don’t think they’re going to get it back. Too many have seen what’s behind them, and what’s funding them, and I for one have had enough of their bile. One thing in particular I’ve noticed when the mob goes after someone: The author tends to be above average, or a really good writer. It’s more than an attack on the authors personal beliefs, it’s all out war against competent writing. It’s as if they are driven to destroy excellence. It has to stop.

ill tell ya what i would criticize. id criticize the characters, as in giving them a peace of my mind, but heres why. so, they just spent a lot of time helping the rest of the world fight for the gods they believe in and love, those people have been giving their lives to stop predathos from killing their gods. so, the characters go, get sucked in by ludinus's angsty nonsense, start blaming everyones problems and faults on gods who havent been involved with any of what theyre upset about. the gods have been locked away, and couldnt interfere, its up to the mortals to handle things. so, the characters buy into the idea that theyre going to decide for the rest of the world about the fate of their gods, live or die. the ultimate tyranny, and having bought into ludinus's nonsense, they call that freedom by removing everyone elses choice, and ignoring what everyone else has been fighting and dying for. so yeah, thats what id criticize them for, being thoughtless, arrogant, gullible tyrants who were seriously thinking about betraying everyone in the world because they think they know better whats best for them. they were seriously considering being the campaign villains who betrayed everyone.

For me it's the pull rates. I actually was fortunate enough to get quite a bit of the product on preorder, and they all filled. Excited as everyone else, I dove into it. I got 20 packs in and only had 2 ex's and a number of pokeball and master ball reverse holos which for me are not very exciting. I stopped opening it cause it's just not a fun set at all. So I have a bunch of this in my closet right now while I decide if I'm going to dump it on the market or let it sit. I really don't have any interest in opening any more of it, even having paid MSRP. People compare it to Evolving Skies, but I would argue it's the worst set since Champion's Path. CP had 2 chase cards and this set has a number more than that, but since you rarely hit on either set, and what you did pull was lackluster, the opening experience is much the same. Prismatic Evolutions is an awful set, and I believe it is objectively so. And pokeball reverse holos are a poor consolation prize.

I find this interesting, as I find it to genuinely true to some extent. I find a llot of self praising each other, as well as a lot of sharing bad advice. I’ve never really pushed into a writing community because of that, the one time I was invited to a writing group I told the guy hosting it that I had read his book, and I genuinely just hadn’t liked it and why. I never got invited back, but that’s okay. When it comes to writing online it feels similar to me as in many creative fields I’ve poked around in the online community (such as the online game dev community). There are general disregard to anyone you don’t know and a lot of excusing their own poor work and others that they like. It feels less like a group of people trying to strive together to get better and make things more meaningful and engaging, but rather, to continue to feel like they are important, even if by doing so they are preventing themselves from getting better. Writing is hard. Making a career out of it is even harder. It’s much easier to excuse your lack of success or if you have found success it’s easier to lord it over people rather than try to improve.

34-years-standing novelist here. It’s an old fratricidal war that today is fought on different fields but with the same arms: deception, exclusion, hypocrisy, lies, back-stabbing … It’s always more difficult to find pure-readers, those who do not aspire to write and are only interested to read good books. Even if they are less and less -because, you know, “anyone can become a writer” (the biggest lie of all)-, pure-readers still should be seen as your only potential audience. It doesn’t exist another one. Therefore, forget about writers, think about pure-readers. And you’ll be fine.

I will always support an author who takes the time and effort to write a good story over a mediocre one only interested in sitting with ‘the cool kids’. What these self fashioned gate keepers don’t understand, is that in five years no one will even remember who they are, because they didn’t do the work, and churned out ‘good enough’ over well done storytelling. This reminds me of Orson Scott Card showing up at Dragon-con (I may be wrong about the convention name, it’s been a while). He had lines that snaked through the entire building eager to see him, while the rest of the ‘cool kids’ had empty rooms. They were mad that Card ‘was allowed’ to be there in the first place. It proved to me that what these gate keepers despise is actual excellence. Their petty ideology is just an excuse. I’m going to go pick up a book by Eriksen. He deserves a read.

Look at the early novels of Aldous Huxley, which were written very hurriedly because he was so poor. Look at •Money in the Bank• by P.G. Wodehouse; not only is it perhaps the finest comic novel ever written in an internment camp, it is one of Wodehouse’s best, I argue, because he was able to give it such an extended polish whereas so many of his novels, excellent as they are, were often sent to the published as soon as he had finished them. * …nonumque prematur in annum membranis intus positis; delere licebit quod non edideris… (Ars Poetica, 388-90) [“And let your manuscript be put away until the ninth year; any line you may delete that has not seen the light of day.”]

Love that you brought this topic up again! I've struggled with this even in the more religious "speculative" side of indie publishing and author circles, but rather as a new writer still figuring out my voice and overtime realising I've long grown out of said circles for quite awhile. Both for my personal beliefs changing, and also that the genres I actually write best in wouldn't fit in their circles either.

So very true and that’s why I’m looking at a different way of doing this maybe investing in viral marketing social media rather than begging people that hate me to look at my book. I don’t wanna play those games with people. I’ve had enough of that I had enough of it in the book tube community. Everything was fake.

We can't ignore the WW1 trench war PTSD evidenced by profuse violence and lack of romance. Especially evident by profuse use of Pagan Lores while dismissing an integral Pagan Heritage of multi partner and gender romance. I mean GO LORE OR GO HOME❤ When film adaptation substitutes a male character for a female character(which appears to be the emphasis of fault). I DO 💍 believe such substitution should follow the original plot at least. Instead of quite a detour of character actions and statements. Which after all is more integral than whether it is a male elf or female elf - follow the original script! Otherwise it becomes too diluted and is more like Tolkien flavored Salt instead of pure Tolkien Spice. Except only when the Tolkien Spice has PTSD❤ tell me what you really really want❤

what annoys me the most is that all these books follow the same blueprint. All the protagonists are the same. All the male love interests are the same. The plot points are the same. All that happens is to change the world and names a little bit - that's all. If you've read ACOTAR then you know all the other popular booktok books, they follow the same scheme.
